Why do we use nicknames instead of real names?

I asked myself this question coming back from the YP...I created my nickname because when i started posting on message boards everybody had already nicks....Everytime I meet someone at a show i want to say my real name but they wont recognize me so I just say my nick....Wouldnt it be better if everybody used their real names...Why do people hide behing nicks, you dont see that in mainstream....Isnt it kind of childish...?

I hated mine when it was first bestowed upon me. Then I added Mighty to it and made it my own.

If we didnt use nicks there would be alot of John's on the board. How would you tell them apart. I feel bad for the Spunky's out there.

I'm the opposite. When I meet people I introduce myself as Ryan. Later they come back and say "dude, I didn't know you were Sly!"

Do you know how many Ryan's are involved in the industry? I know about 5 off the pop of my head. As far as I know, I'm the only Sly. Thats why we have nick names.

it is much more fun to yell 'peekers' ' deep rub' accross a crowded area... plus most of them have something to do with a real name..

I think it's because no one wants to be known as Brian99, Mike19, Jason35, or Nick3131

As for there are many johns and ryans etc...Im pretty sure there are a lot of people called the same names in other industries and yet this is not a problem, hell there was four 'Olivier' in my class when i was in high school and it didnt matter...

I think first name and company would be good...

I agree, but some peeps have kids, etc etc...I work very closely with some people who do NOT want their names out there. Hey, you'd be surprised to see how many mainstream company's actually would like to see your actual history in this industry...why hide that from a possible mainsteam employer and not your real name on a message board (some employers might actually be "clever" enough to check out your background)...NOT that we're looking for work in the mainstream arena (seriously I hope to not ever go back even tho there are some amazing opportunitues)...
