They've beefed up their D, and their offense was coming together nicely last year. With their fine haul in the 2010 draft they were able to plug some gaping holes and are looking stronger than they have for a long time.

I like their chances for a division title this year.

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/footb...st-draft_N.htm

Quote:
The 49ers entered the draft with 10 picks— one each in the first, second, fifth and sixth rounds; two third-round picks; and four fourth-round picks.

"I think San Francisco is headed in the right direction," ESPN NFL analyst Mark Schlereth says. "I think they could finish anywhere from 8-8 (to) 10-6. I think they'll enter the last two weeks of the season with a real shot at the division title."
10 and 6 would be nice. I'm hoping for a 12 and 4 finish though. I can just see the chemistry in this year's team starting to finally gel.

Dream on you say? Ha

We'll see in around 15 weeks from now how things are looking. Niners may have gone 8-8 last year but several of those losses were damn close and for all intents and purposes should have gone to the niners but were lost in the last 30 seconds by last-ditch efforts (Vikings, I'm looking your way). They could have easily finished 10-6 last year, or better.

Argue if you must, but anyone going in underestimating SF this year is a fool. They will burn you in the pools if you do.

5 weeks to go, give or take a few days. Can't wait.

GO NINERS!

as a long time 9ers fan I certainly hope they have a great year...its been forever since they did. 2 games each against the Seahawks, Rams and (Warner-less) Cards definately helps!

Let's see:
7-9 record in 2008
8-8 record in 2009

I'm going with 9-7 record in 2010

Let's see... Arizona finished the season 2 years ago with a 9-7 record and then went all the way to the Superbowl.

I could live with 9-7 for the niners, as long as it's enough to get them into the playoffs, something they haven't done since '02.

Niners will only be as good as their QB. Do you really believe in Smith?

They have a 12-4 kind of a team with a 7-9 type QB
That usually means 8 or 9 wins.

Btw... keep an eye on Miami. The Pats are taking a step back, the Jets are over-hyped, the Bills suck. The Dolphins have a very tough first half of the schedule. If they start 4-4 or better they will win their division and be a very serious contender in the playoffs.

Still don't like the qb play. Smith isn't the answer...

All true, but I've always thought Smith has some potential and could "come into his own" one of these years, the possibility certainly exists. But if he doesn't the Niners now have Carr who was a 1st overall pick in the 2002 draft. Granted he sat on the Giants' bench all last year but he's a good QB who I'm hoping will either prod Alex Smith into some level of excellence OR he comes in off the bench and fires the team up himself. Either way the QB position on the 49ers is stronger because of him.

As an added note I'm also kind of interested to see what Detroit does with Shaun Hill. I like that guy, he shows some great skill on certain plays, but has downright sucked on others, which was why he lost the starting position last year. If he gets to play for the Lions this season maybe he'll show some greater stability.

Smith may have a chance, I haven't seen enough of him to know. Carr on the other hand is a disaster waiting to happen. He holds onto the ball longer than Neil O'donnell and plays not to lose rather than playing to win.

I hope it works out for Smith.
I'm a big Mike Singletary fan (as a player and a coach).
Also you guys were kind enough to let Nolan go and he should be a huge boost for the Dolphins this year as their new Def Coordinator, so I feel like I owe the 9ers some positive wishes

I'm hoping Carr's gameplay will get some new direction under Singletary & Co. The team's front office doesn't forsee any impending disaster coming because of him, I don't see why I should. Perhaps they see something you don't?

If David Carr becomes your starter at any point in the season you will need offensive line play on par with the line the Cowboys had protecting Aikman to win. A Rookie LT and G are going to have a hard time providing that. Watch him in preseason, Carr holds the ball for a decade and eats it much more often than he should. QBs don't usually change that sort of thing later in their careers, they usually hold it even longer and become even less decisive. Carr has all the physical tools, he just doesn't have the reaction speed necessary. Neither did Tim Couch, Neil Odonnell or a lot of others with good arms.

I'm surprised the 9ers didn't add Marc Bulger as a backup QB. He knows the system and could have been a good backup/mentor for Smith.
